PSA FROM SHERIFF JOSEPH O’DONOGHUE

Atlantic County Sheriff Joseph O’Donoghue announces that another phone scam has been reported in our area.

The scammer has identified himself as “Lieutenant John Ruhlman” No one by that name works for the Atlantic County Sheriff’s Office.

The latest scam appears to be taking advantage of people on parole. The scammer is warning that there is a warrant out for the potential victim because they did not register an address or submit DNA.

If there was a concern of that nature, your parole officer would be in contact with you before a warrant was issued. If a warrant was issued, a law enforcement officer would seek you out for arrest. They would not call over the phone to have you make a payment and report to the courthouse

As always, never provide any financial information over the phone. If someone purporting to be an officer asks for any type of credit card or bank account number over the phone, it’s a scam.

Additionally, law enforcement will not have you go to a business and purchase prepaid cards or make any electronic payments.

Detectives are investigating the source of these calls. If you are ever in doubt about the veracity of a call, please contact our department at 609-909-7200.
