Construction of upgrades and improvements to the Town of Hammonton Water infrastructure Project Route 54 Water Main Replacement (1st Road to 2nd Road) with a construction cost of $3,102,000.00, were finance by the New Jersey Water Bank (NJWB). The NJWB is a State Revolving Fund program jointly administered by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the New Jersey Infrastructure Bank (NJIB) and uses a combination of funds provided by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the DEP, and the NJIB to provide very low interest loans to borrowers for environmental infrastructure projects.
This project will provide significant water quality, reliability, and public health benefits by replacing aging water mains and associated water service lines while upsizing the existing distribution main along Route 54 from 1st Road to 2nd Road. The improvements will increase the capacity and e9iciency of the Town’s water distribution network, improve water pressure and fire protection capabilities, reduce the potential for water main breaks and service interruptions, and minimize water loss resulting from leaks in aging infrastructure. By modernizing this critical section of the water system, the project will ensure a more dependable supply of safe, high-quality drinking water for residents, businesses, and emergency services, while supporting future growth and strengthening the long-term resilience of Hammonton’s public water infrastructure.

The Route 54 Reconstruction Project will have a traffic switch in place at the 3rd Street and Bellevue Avenue intersection and the Front Street and Egg Harbor Road intersection on April 16th and 17th.
Sidewalk removal will be done in the area from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Keep in mind that the schedule may change due to inclement weather. Road Work: Lane Shifts Bellevue Ave. • March 25, 26 & 27
The Route 54 Reconstruction Project will have a lane shift in place on Bellevue Avenue on the following dates and locations:
- Between 3rd Street and Egg Harbor Road on March 25.
- Between Egg Harbor Road and 1st Road on March 26.
- Between 1st Road and 2nd Road on March 27.
Concrete work will be done in the area from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Keep in mind that the schedule may change due to inclement weather. PSA: The Route 54 Reconstruction Project will close Bellevue Avenue in both directions between Valley Avenue and Liberty Street during the week of March 16-20. Crews will be working in the area in preparation for future road resurfacing from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and a traffic detour will be in effect. PSA: Heads up! The Route 54 Reconstruction Project will close Bellevue Avenue in both directions between Valley Avenue and Liberty Street from January 19 to January 23. Traffic Advisory: Route 54 Reconstruction Project
On Monday, September 22 through Friday, September 26 a lane shift will be in effect for concrete flatwork on Route 54 (12th Street) from Monroe Avenue to Chew Road in Hammonton.
All road work will take place from 7a.m. to 5p.m. Motorists should expect delays and seek alternate routes, especially during peak travel times. Please exercise caution when in the area. Your patience during this inconvenience is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
- On Monday, September 8 through Wednesday, September 10 a single lane, alternating traffic pattern will be in effect for concrete flatwork on Route 54 (Bellevue Avenue) from Packard Street to Vine Street in Hammonton.
- On Thursday, September 11 to Friday, September 12 a shoulder closure will take place for concrete flatwork on Route 54 (Bellevue Avenue) from Horton Street to 2nd Street in Hammonton.
- On Monday, September 8 a shoulder closure will take place curb work on Route 54 (Bellevue Avenue) from 2nd Road to Chew Road in Hammonton.
- On Tuesday, September 9 through Friday, September 12 a shoulder closure will take place for curb work on Route 54 (12th Street) from the A.C. Expressway to 2nd Road in Hammonton.
August 9th, 2025 Traffic Advisory: Route 54 (Bellevue Avenue) in both directions is scheduled to be closed due to NJ TRANSIT railroad crossing work and track replacement in Hammonton. The area will be closed to traffic, at the intersection between Railroad Avenue and Egg Harbor Road from Friday, August 22 through Friday, August 29. Work will take place from 7a.m. to 5p.m. each day. A traffic detour will be in place. Railroad work is subject to change due to inclement weather. Motorists should expect delays and seek alternate routes especially during peak travel times. Please exercise caution when in the area. Your patience during this inconvenience is greatly appreciated. PSA: Work on the Route 54 reconstruction project will begin early June. Roadway resurfacing, concrete flatwork and signal upgrades will take place from the Atlantic City Expressway to Route 30 (White Horse Pike). Drivers can expect temporary lane shifts, shoulder closings and traffic detours throughout the project’s timeline.
