The Hammonton Public Works Department is committed to improving safety and facilitating smoother driving during winter weather conditions.

In response to varying snowfall amounts and durations, town trucks may need to clear your street multiple times. As snow is pushed off the plows, it can accumulate in driveways, which is an unavoidable consequence of the plowing process. Homeowners are responsible for removing this snow from their driveways.

Some useful tips to make dealing with snow-related tasks less frustrating:

  • Place your trash and recycling bins at the curb for collection, and be sure to take them back in promptly to avoid any potential damage.
  • When shoveling snow, direct it to the right side of your driveway as you face the street to reduce the amount that accumulates on your driveway apron.
  • If you can, wait until town trucks have made at least two passes on your street before clearing your driveway, as wider roads may require more passes—typically four—to push the snow back to the curb, allowing melting snow to reach the storm drains.
  • Always shovel or blow snow onto the curb or grass rather than into the street, as this can create dangerous ice patches.
  • Do not park on the street for one hour after snow begins to fall and 10 hours after it stops. This practice helps expedite snow removal and prevents cars from being plowed in.

To insure the safety of pedestrians, residents must remove snow from sidewalks following a snow fall.

Please remember that children are walking to school and bus stops are all over town. In the event of deep snow, please shovel around your mailbox and fire hydrants near your house for the safety of everyone.

Not all roads in Hammonton are under the care of the Town’s Department of Public Works. During inclement weather, we frequently receive inquiries from residents regarding the state of roads that are actually maintained by Atlantic County or the NJ Department of Transportation (DOT).
